Død Snø 2 (2014) – review

WebDL – norwegian & english audio track + italian subtitles

Long story short: after a platoon of nazi zombies almost killed a man, he drive away, thinking to be safe, but it can’t be more far from the truth…

I saw Død Snø some months ago, and I laughed a lot; it was since maybe Braindead (that accidentaly appears on a printed T-Shirt of one of the characters) that I had so much fun watching an horror-comedy, a not so easy to find genre indeed…

So, I was eagerly awaiting Død Snø 2 – a.k.a. Dead Snow: Red VS Dead – and I chose to not read ANYTHING about it, to be surprised at the moment of the first view, in a good or bad way… luckily, I was really happy to discover that this movie is stronger and funnier than its predecessor!

Usually I don’t spend much time for a brief synopsis – you could always read IMDB of one of the other million reviews in the wild – but I want to do for this movie, to give you an idea of what kind of weird one it is…

Near the end of Død Snø, Martin was forced to chop his own right arm to avoid the spread of the zombie infection; after that, he run away from the nazi zombie platoon to save his life; Død Snø 2 starts where the first movie ends; while Martin is driving away, Herzog, the nazi commander, grab himself on the car door; a truck smash him out, leaving one of Herzog’s arms inside the car; then Martin has a car accident, finds himself in a hospital, and discovers that doctors reattached his arm to the body… the bad thing is that this is not Martin’s arm, but Herzog’s!

From that point, anything happen; zombie arm with its own will, a so-called Zombie Squad – three American teenagers – fly to Norway to help Martin; zombie platoon remember their original mission was to kill every inhabitants of a small village, to stop them our heros should awake a soviet platoon killed by the nazis during WWII, turning them in zombies, too… it seems an intricated story at first, but really it is not; it flows from the start to the end in a so good way; I had so much fun, and found myself laugh loud a lot when some surreal things happen…

At the end, story is really good; acting is convincing and dialogs are strange and amusing; makeup is better than the first film, and they used a real tank, too… so, what do you want more from an horror comedy?

An absolute little masterpiece mix of black comedy and horror; a “must see” for anyone who think Braindead is a masterpiece itself; reccomended of course to any zombie aficionados and horror fan that are capable to elevate their suspension of disbilief to a totally new level… “Zombies? OK, I can get it, but… nazi zombies? Are you kidding?!?”

The Horde (2009) – review

DVB – italian audio track

Long story short: four cops assault a gang inside an high building, but they should collaborate if they want to survive to a zombie attack!

A surprisingly good zombie film from France – maybe the only one of this genre from this country?

I liked it very much; the story – apart the usual, incredibly sudden zombie apocalypse – it’s strong enough to keep viewers interested until the end; acting is credible too; make up is good as almost all SFX; location is a bit poor, as it’s filmed almost exclusively inside a buildig, but this is not important in this kind of movies.

Gruesome and violent enough to please every horror fan, but also action and cops lovers will surely like this one – a “must see” for all zombie aficionados!

The Revenant (2009) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: after a funeral of a soldier dead in Iraq, we discover he’s not dead as all were thinking…

Finally a black horror comedy! It’s basically a story of a friendship between an undead soldier and his best friend… so good, that when the soldier rise from his grave, his friend is the first person he thinks to visit!

The story is very good, and has an increasing pace, starting from a slow, almost boring beginning to an unthinkable end, with a lot of action and fun in the between!

The actors are not superstars, but the did a very good job, and, despite the supernatural facts, they are still believeable; music is good, make-up too; CGI effects are quite poor but frankly they are few and not so important for the whole story.

It’s very amusing for everyone who loves zombie movies in general, and undead, vampires… whatever… not reccomeded to the ones who don’t want to hear bad words, see bullets flying all arounds, litres of blood (hey, I live in a metric country!) – but, honestly, if you take away all these things from a movie, very little will remain…

The Battery (2012) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: two former baseball players are travelling around the country after a zombie apocalypse.

As I like zombies – and monsters in general – and also independent films, I wanted to give this movie a try.

First half of the movie is very slow but interesting; there are some shots not usually seen in zombie movies; second half is slower and quite boring… what I liked very much is the ’70s aspect of the photography, what I didn’t like is the soundtrack, really present as one of the main character listen often to the music played by a portable CD player – a little anachronistic, told by one that still collect laserdisc, but will surely use an MP3 player in that kind of situation…

Acting is not that bad; locations are few and poors, as this is a low budget movie; decent SFX and some interesting ideas don’t save it completely, but put it in that B-movie “special place”… a place where someone will surely find it and probably love it! Personally, I didn’t fall in love with it, but neither hated it; hey, I could not love all zombie movies, after all!

Cockneys vs Zombies (2012) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: two brothers should do a bank robbery to save the retiriment building of their grandpa, but zombies ruins everything…

Another zombie comedy… not “Shawn of the Dead” of course, but a simple, effective movie; good acting, passable SFX – considering the low budget – and laughs!

Any zombie fan that is capable to watch a british comedy will appreciate it!

The Returned (2013) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: the infected survivals of a zombie outbreak are finishing their cure to be normal

A simple story that turns to be not the usual zombie movie – run, hyde, survive – but more a drama and a thriller. And, even if I must admit (and you know it) that I LOVE zombie movies, I like this one as well, maybe just because it’s different.

Acting is very good, SFX are sparse but good as well; music is interesting as locations. The final twist was unexpected – not by me, but… oh well, after what? 10.000 movies seen, “maybe” it is becaming quite difficult to surprise me.

So, if you like zombies, but also thriller, and you have not watched thousand movies – yet – this is definitely a film to watch!
