The Terminator (1984) – review

Laserdisc – italian audio track
Long story short: a cyborg comes from the future to kill the mother of the resistance leader.

I needed to check the quality of the audio of this old italian PAL laserdisc,  so I thought: “Hey, I watched it a lot of time ago, so let’s watch it again…”

No need to write something more about the story, as I’m quite sure anybody on this planet who loves sci-fi has seen it – multiple times… but I should write something, so here I am!

Acting is quite good, and I loved the fact there are many Cameron’s preferred actors; Schwarzy, Lance Henriksen, Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton (as the punk leader). OK, not Academy Award lever, I should admit, but not bad at all!

Music is good, and follow the pace of the story, that was very original at the time; SFX makes you smile if compared to nowaday’s ones, but think it was the top notch at the time, and I still love the non-CGI effects, so…

At the end, a milestone in the sci-fi panorama; the last few ones remained on this world who hasn’t watched it yet, should buy a copy and watch it… NOW!

My vote: 7.5/10

Babylon A.D. (2008) – review

DVB – italian audio track

Long story short: in a near future, a mercenary should bring a young girl from Russia to New York, and he discovers she’s not what she looks like…

Vin Diesel stars in this sci-fi movie, and he’s the usual Vin: strong, big badass, but with a good hearth at the end… Michelle Yeoh acting is really good, and the young girl is gorgeous!

Set in a not so distant future, with much more problems than actual world, acting is above the average, even if sometimes forced to be a bit comic-like (see Gerard Depardieu in particular); SFX are really gorgeous and seamless, with some interesting hi-tech “things”… story is simple but effective, music is rightly places; what is missing is… don’t know, “something more”! I mean, I’m expecting some more twists in the story, and that should happen more often, but it was not the case.

With this in mind, don’t expect a calm journey; at the contrary, this is a fast packed sci-fi action, and it will be appreciated by all sci-fi fans – in particular Diesel’s ones – but lacking that “quid”, it could be not considered a masterpiece, that’s it.

Battle Planet (2008) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: a soldier is sent to a distant planet for a secret mission, that will be different from what he thought…

Another low budget sci-fi movie; this is what you are thinking… and you are right, but this is better of what I thought myself when I watched its trailer!

Yes, I agree that CGI SFX are really bad and locations are cheap, but aliens are fair, acting is quite good and the most important thing is that this movie has a story that’s good enough to let the movie to be watched from the start to the end with no problems, and it’s also a meaningful one, difficult to find in nowadays’ films!

So, if you like sci-fi and could watch a movie with less-than-perfect CGI SFX, “Battle Planet” will surely worth a look.

Robocop (2014) – review

WEBdl – italian audio track

Long story short: a mega corporation needs an human to be implanted into a robot, to change the law in its favour.

I’m a big fan of the original Verhoeven’s RoboCop, so I was quite skeptikal when I decided to watch this version… and I must admit I was well pleased!

The story is similar to the original one, but it’s different enough to be a good story; SFX are, obviously, gorgeous and really superior in comparison the the weak ones used in the 1987’s version – sorry, even if I love the original RoboCop, the SFX were quite poor, in particual the stop-motion…

Music is good, locations too; acting is awesome, but this is obvious, taking in account the actors present in the movie… Michael Keaton is a really convincing bad CEO, while Gary Oldman is the good scientist, and Samuel L. Jackson is the perfect son of a… anchorman!

A very fast action and technologically packed film, reccomended to all sci-fi aficionados who love robots (ED-208/9) and cyborgs (RoboCop).

Captain Harlock (2013) – review

WEBdl – italian audio track

Long story short: a space pirate is trying to conquer back the Earth, fighting against the Gaia Coalition.

30+ years ago, as a young boy, I used to watch any japanese animation series (anime was a word still not invented, or at least used here), and Captain Harlock was one of my favourite; watching this movie, though, has not helped me to remember the original one – but probably it’s due to the fact that I’m growing old day after day…

The animation is very good, and the characters are well enveloped, but a lot of the spectacular shots seems – to me, at least – anything but new… I watched hundred sci-fi films, and many shots here are very close to the ones found in other movies; so, I was not so surprised for them; the story is slow and sometimes nonsensical… pointless, at the end, just an excuse to glue all the shots together…

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t hate this movie, but I found it… useless? Reccomended to any anime fan, but sci-fi lovers are warned.

The Machine (2013) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: during a new cold war, UK needs the ultimate weapon, and an invincible android seems the answer.

Actually, to be precise, she is not an android, but a gyonid… read: a robot in a form of a gorgeous girl! Even it is was used, how many times? 1000? Well, who can’t say this is not a subject to use and abuse? I mean, we (sci-fi lovers) all loves robots, in particular with a female form…

OK, let’s back to the movie; it is not the most original story, it’s true, but it’s well narrated; acting is above average and believable, the electronic music score is good and appropriate, CGI effects are almost perfect.

There is a strange “mood” during the whole film… something I could not define well… maybe it’s because is not the usual american movie, but I liked it nonetheless.

Despite the fact the movie is quite good, I should advise that many genre lovers will find it rather predictable; but it remains a good movie, and probably will gain some kind of cult status in twenty years, like many movies did.

Splice (2009) – review

DVD PAL – italian audio track

Long story short: two DNA scientists create a never seen before living… “thing”!

I remember few years ago when I watched the first time the trailer for this movie; interesting, strange, I had to watch it – and I watched years ago; today I just wanted to rewatch it, this time with a better audio/video format, player and TV set.

This is a strange film, difficult to include only in one category: it’s sci-fi, of course, with mutants, monsters etc. but it’s also a bit horror and drama; a slow movie, slower than usual sci-fi movies around these days, but it takes you to think, at the contrary of many other movies.

SFX are wonderful – I often asked myself if the actress impersonating Dren has four digits… Adrien Brody did his job quite right, at least how his face permits… this is not an action film, and is quite slow, so you got to take in account this.

If you watch ALL sci-fi movies, in particular with mutants and/or monster, you’ll like it; if not, this is not a movie for all – some will be disgusted, also ethically.

Supernova (2000) – review

PAL DVD – italian audio track

Long story short: a medical rescue spaceship receives an SOS call, but of course everything will not be as it seems…

As I’m going to restore this movie, and because a long time is passed from the last time I watched it, I took two hours to rewatch it, because I had good memories of it, despite the fact many don’t like this movie a lot.

Let’s begin saying that it was a movie with a lot of troubles: three or more directors (Walter Hill, Francis Ford Coppola and others), many writers (up to ten, maybe) surely didn’t help this movie… just thing there are about twenty minutes of deleted scenes in the DVD – many, if not all, worth to be used for the final version… add to this the fact that maybe up to FORTY minutes were cut, and you could be a little bit less mean torward this film…

James Spader acting is quite good, even if his italian dub is not the best; Angela Bassett is gorgeous; the other actors are convincing enough; SFX are good, music too, production is not cheap and you have never that feeling of “another SyFy movie”; this is a movie that could have been perfect, but…

As I wrote before, many cuts were made to this film, so watching it “as is” leaves with some unresolved questions and plain visible cuts… but there are some naked women there, so, hey, it must means something, or not? (^^,)

But, at the end, it’s not a bad movie; actually, I like it very much and if you are a Sci-fi (and a SyFy, too) aficionado, you should give it a chance!
