How to improve video capture quality

Apart the obvious things (better source media and player, better cables etc.) I’d like to explore some different approaches:

average/median multiple capture (using the same media/player)

I tried several times, and it works really well – it delete noise and dropouts NOT present in the media/player

average/median multiple capture (using different media/player)

usually it delete noise and dropouts ALSO if present in the media/player

hardware TBC

it improves the quality of tape based media – like VHS or Video8

hardware Comb Filter

it improves the quality of composite based media – like VHS or Laserdisc

phase-inversion trick

it deletes completely any dot crawl in theory – never found the working way in real life, though… anyone who is aware of how to make it work, please post the info here, thanks!

found here – it seems it works well (apart the change in color)… further investigations and tests are needed!

I, Frankenstein (2014) – review

WEBdl – italian audio track

Long story short: Frankenstein is in the middle of an epical war between demons and gargoyles, and should decide which faction to join.

I must admit that this movie passed under my radar… I mean, I watched the trailer maybe twice, but only in part and I thought “OK, I will take a look at it, sooner or later”… and yesterday I decided it was the time.

And, strangely, I liked it… much! Strangely, because I thought it was the usual movie where Frankenstein is only an excuse to put it in the title – a bit like “Frankenstein’s Army” – but in this case he is the main star!

And, around the middle of the movie, I asked myself: “Wait! Bus he is…” and I didn’t find his name until the end credits… Aaron Eckhart! Great, underestimated actor! He played the creature very well, and his nemesis, another great actor, Bill Nighy, is on par with him; Kevin Grevioux played a secondary role, but I like him as well – both the latter two were on the Underworld saga.

A lot of action, very good SFX and music, an unusual but quite convincing story; at least, this time the direct opposites of demons are not angels, but gargoyles!

I think anybody will be pleased to watch this movie: action fans, horror and supernatural geeks, and casual viewers too!

Cockneys vs Zombies (2012) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: two brothers should do a bank robbery to save the retiriment building of their grandpa, but zombies ruins everything…

Another zombie comedy… not “Shawn of the Dead” of course, but a simple, effective movie; good acting, passable SFX – considering the low budget – and laughs!

Any zombie fan that is capable to watch a british comedy will appreciate it!

Robocop (2014) – review

WEBdl – italian audio track

Long story short: a mega corporation needs an human to be implanted into a robot, to change the law in its favour.

I’m a big fan of the original Verhoeven’s RoboCop, so I was quite skeptikal when I decided to watch this version… and I must admit I was well pleased!

The story is similar to the original one, but it’s different enough to be a good story; SFX are, obviously, gorgeous and really superior in comparison the the weak ones used in the 1987’s version – sorry, even if I love the original RoboCop, the SFX were quite poor, in particual the stop-motion…

Music is good, locations too; acting is awesome, but this is obvious, taking in account the actors present in the movie… Michael Keaton is a really convincing bad CEO, while Gary Oldman is the good scientist, and Samuel L. Jackson is the perfect son of a… anchorman!

A very fast action and technologically packed film, reccomended to all sci-fi aficionados who love robots (ED-208/9) and cyborgs (RoboCop).

Captain Harlock (2013) – review

WEBdl – italian audio track

Long story short: a space pirate is trying to conquer back the Earth, fighting against the Gaia Coalition.

30+ years ago, as a young boy, I used to watch any japanese animation series (anime was a word still not invented, or at least used here), and Captain Harlock was one of my favourite; watching this movie, though, has not helped me to remember the original one – but probably it’s due to the fact that I’m growing old day after day…

The animation is very good, and the characters are well enveloped, but a lot of the spectacular shots seems – to me, at least – anything but new… I watched hundred sci-fi films, and many shots here are very close to the ones found in other movies; so, I was not so surprised for them; the story is slow and sometimes nonsensical… pointless, at the end, just an excuse to glue all the shots together…

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t hate this movie, but I found it… useless? Reccomended to any anime fan, but sci-fi lovers are warned.

Vampire Academy (2014) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: a vampire princess is threatened inside of the vampire academy, but by whom?

Hogwarts seen at the Twilight… but it’s not that bad – of course, you have at least to like Harry Potter and the Twilight saga!

The only BIG problem – to me, at least – is that during the whole film, there is ALWAYS someone who’s talking… I mean, during the 104 minutes of the movie, excluding credits, I think that for only maybe five or six minutes there are shots without dialogs…

If you can live with this, you’ll find youngster vampires and their guardians that study in a vampire academy, just like normal teenagers – except they don’t know what is Facebook, Twitter and the like… oh, how lucky are them!

Acting is quite good – to be a young adult movie, of course…and you will find there unexpected actors; location are right, music – the few times you could hear it not covered by continuous dialog – is good enough; SFX are few but good.

At the end, if you like vampire movies, and you can stand almost two hours of teenagers that continually talk – and sometimes fight, too – then you could give it a try… you are warned!

The Returned (2013) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: the infected survivals of a zombie outbreak are finishing their cure to be normal

A simple story that turns to be not the usual zombie movie – run, hyde, survive – but more a drama and a thriller. And, even if I must admit (and you know it) that I LOVE zombie movies, I like this one as well, maybe just because it’s different.

Acting is very good, SFX are sparse but good as well; music is interesting as locations. The final twist was unexpected – not by me, but… oh well, after what? 10.000 movies seen, “maybe” it is becaming quite difficult to surprise me.

So, if you like zombies, but also thriller, and you have not watched thousand movies – yet – this is definitely a film to watch!
