Frankenstein’s Army (2013) – review

WEBdl – italian audio track

Long story short: few Russian soldiers respond to a distress signal, discovering an horrible Nazi weapon.

I’m not new to this kind of movies, but I must admit I was surprised – in a good way. I mean, of course this is not a masterpiece, and it will never be included in a top list (I think) but it has “something” – still to be understood – that catches you, at least if you like horror movies like me…

The idea is nothing new; take an handheld camera, and shoot the film pretending it’s a documentary (read: mockumentary); still, it works! Think of it something like Star Trek’s Borgs meet The Blair Witch Project in an Hostel… of course, everything should be shacked and mixed together; add also a Robocop’s ED-209, some (a lot?) of FPS videogame shots, and you have the final product!

Acting is far from perfect, but quite believable; the director of photography has chosen this particular color grading that gives you the idea it was shot during WWII; special effects are almost all non-CGI, and even if they seems simple sometimes, they are effective; music is non present for most if not all the duration of the movie.

It’s strange, sick, but nevertheless interesting. If you can stand a lot of blood, human bodies and part of them, *maybe* you could enjoy it… you are warned!

The Machine (2013) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: during a new cold war, UK needs the ultimate weapon, and an invincible android seems the answer.

Actually, to be precise, she is not an android, but a gyonid… read: a robot in a form of a gorgeous girl! Even it is was used, how many times? 1000? Well, who can’t say this is not a subject to use and abuse? I mean, we (sci-fi lovers) all loves robots, in particular with a female form…

OK, let’s back to the movie; it is not the most original story, it’s true, but it’s well narrated; acting is above average and believable, the electronic music score is good and appropriate, CGI effects are almost perfect.

There is a strange “mood” during the whole film… something I could not define well… maybe it’s because is not the usual american movie, but I liked it nonetheless.

Despite the fact the movie is quite good, I should advise that many genre lovers will find it rather predictable; but it remains a good movie, and probably will gain some kind of cult status in twenty years, like many movies did.

Big Ass Spider! (2013) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: A big spider is on the loose, and our hero must find it.

This movie is not the usual Z-movie; I mean, yes, it’s kinda silly, but nice at the same time; acting is not that bad, music is quite good, CGI effects are bad – but I’ve seen worst; it recalls me the ’50s monster movies, with few resources but a lot of heart…

All in all, a kind movie if you have one and half hour to waste, and hey! A movie with Ray Wise *can’t* be so bad… or can it?

Bounty Killer (2013) – review

WEBdl – english audio track

Long story short: a girl seeks revenge, and to accomplish her mission she has to learn how to be a killer.

“…and now, something completely different!” …or not? Bounty Killer is a strange, fascinating film; it’s not for everyone’s tastes, but if you like violence, weirdness and laughs, then you could like it!

Just take Pulp Fiction, Mad Max, Tank Girl, put them in the kitchen mixer, press max speed and voilà: here you are this movie!

SFX leaves to be desired but hey, this is not a big budget movie; indeed, it is just the long version of a previous short – that I should still watch, I must admit; acting too is not so convincing, but the main actress is gorgeous, and you’ll find a pair of known faces that will make you say “Hey, but isn’t he…”

All in all, a funny post-apocalyptic movie, with much violence and some laughs here and there; adviced for anybody with a sense of humor and good stomach!

Underworld: Awakening (2012) – review

DVB PAL FTA – italian audio track

Long story short: lady vampire awakes after 12 years into a freezer, and she’s seeking revenge!

The only missing chapter from my BD collection – but soon it will be there, too; even if I watched it some months ago, my wife forget it – as usual – so I was happy to have a reason to watch it again… c’mon, a beautiful vampire lady should be a GOOD reason to watch it! (^^,)

After the third episode, that’s actually a prequel with the gorgeous Rhona Mitra, Kate Beckinsale is back into another Underworld movie… and she’s meanest than ever! It’s not a casual choice one of my cat is named after her characters Selene…

A lot of actions, vampires, werewolves, blood, you knows… a good mix between two different supernatural species. Kate is gorgeous, and other actors are quite good; Stephen Rea is an almost believable bad guy, and the super lycan is a pleasant, even if a bit exagerated, surprise.

What can I add more? All horror and fantasy fans will be pleased; not a masterpiece, but if you think it’s the fourth of the franchise, it’s good enough!

Fearless (2006) – review

DVB PAL FTA – italian audio track

Long story short: a boy, son of a great martial art master, is defeated, and promise himself he will never be defeated again.

A martial art movie, based on the true story of Master Huo Yuanjia, founder of Jin Wu Sports Federation.

I like martial arts movies, even if I’m not an expert of this kind of movie, so this review may rely only on personal tastes without proper backgrounds…

Story is convincing – maybe because is baded on real facts; Jet Li too, as the other actors; of course, you can’t watch a martial arts movie without stunning coreography and impossible moves – they are all there! First part is the one with most action, then the middle part is about reflection and the third part again with action.

All in all, a good movie with a lot of action, but also with a dramatic, true story behind it; everyone will enjoy it I think, not only martial arts fans.

Splice (2009) – review

DVD PAL – italian audio track

Long story short: two DNA scientists create a never seen before living… “thing”!

I remember few years ago when I watched the first time the trailer for this movie; interesting, strange, I had to watch it – and I watched years ago; today I just wanted to rewatch it, this time with a better audio/video format, player and TV set.

This is a strange film, difficult to include only in one category: it’s sci-fi, of course, with mutants, monsters etc. but it’s also a bit horror and drama; a slow movie, slower than usual sci-fi movies around these days, but it takes you to think, at the contrary of many other movies.

SFX are wonderful – I often asked myself if the actress impersonating Dren has four digits… Adrien Brody did his job quite right, at least how his face permits… this is not an action film, and is quite slow, so you got to take in account this.

If you watch ALL sci-fi movies, in particular with mutants and/or monster, you’ll like it; if not, this is not a movie for all – some will be disgusted, also ethically.

The Moth Diaries (2011) – review

DVB PAL FTA – italian audio track

Long story short: a new strange girl arrives in a single-sex school, and she’s troublesome.

Yesterday we (me and my wife) saw a trailer on TV about a movie that seems interesting… something with vampire, perhaps?

“Let’s watch it!”, she said… this often is a reason to NOT watch a movie, but you know? sometimes I’m good enough, so let’s give it a chance.

Well, what I must say? I thought to watch a vampire movie – we love this kind of films – but after half an hour, almost nothing happened… and, after that, few interesting things has happened… actors are quite convincing, but the story itself is not; SFX are almost non-existent; music – the few – is not that bad…

My advice: even if it’s not the worst movie I’ve seen, avoid to watch it, until you like boring and slow story about girls, alive and dead…

My vote: 3/10 (and I’m good today!)

Supernova (2000) – review

PAL DVD – italian audio track

Long story short: a medical rescue spaceship receives an SOS call, but of course everything will not be as it seems…

As I’m going to restore this movie, and because a long time is passed from the last time I watched it, I took two hours to rewatch it, because I had good memories of it, despite the fact many don’t like this movie a lot.

Let’s begin saying that it was a movie with a lot of troubles: three or more directors (Walter Hill, Francis Ford Coppola and others), many writers (up to ten, maybe) surely didn’t help this movie… just thing there are about twenty minutes of deleted scenes in the DVD – many, if not all, worth to be used for the final version… add to this the fact that maybe up to FORTY minutes were cut, and you could be a little bit less mean torward this film…

James Spader acting is quite good, even if his italian dub is not the best; Angela Bassett is gorgeous; the other actors are convincing enough; SFX are good, music too, production is not cheap and you have never that feeling of “another SyFy movie”; this is a movie that could have been perfect, but…

As I wrote before, many cuts were made to this film, so watching it “as is” leaves with some unresolved questions and plain visible cuts… but there are some naked women there, so, hey, it must means something, or not? (^^,)

But, at the end, it’s not a bad movie; actually, I like it very much and if you are a Sci-fi (and a SyFy, too) aficionado, you should give it a chance!
